One of the hardest things to do when picking a college is to really look at the big picture.

When considering which college to attend it is easy to only look at the face value of each school itself. Sports, campus life, reputation of a certain degree field, financial considerations and overall popularity are the types of factors that are typically considered when picking a future alma mater, and those are all good things to consider. But if you leave out one important consideration, it could really put a damper on your transition into the career world.

The most important factor you should not overlook when choosing a school is: (more…)

Sure you need a great résumé, nice interview clothes, a portfolio and all of those other things your professors preach, but none of those will do you much good unless you learn how to network and network often.

Normally I am against the “spray and pray” mentality, but when it comes to networking, getting your name out there in as many circles (that apply to your field in any way, shape or form) is essential. I have planned on starting a blog for months and figured the last five weeks of my college career would be the perfect time to start one. Okay, so maybe that last sentence is laced with sarcasm, but truthfully, I wish I would have gotten this blog going a long time ago.

Being a soon-to-be college grad, I have tried to complete most of the typical preparations for my “post college life.” But as the last year progressed and my experience and knowledge expanded, I began to notice two interesting trends.

1. Most of the people targeting soon-to-be (and recent graduates) about how to get a job, were well established in their career and their content was from an established professionals perspective. They had not been in our shoes in well over a decade and last I checked, A LOT has changed in the last decade.

2. The other trend I noticed started to drive me nuts. Most people feed into the misguided mindset that “after college you get a job,” as if there was a law that you couldn’t get a job until after you graduated. If that is your mindset, you are only setting yourself up for failure. If you do things right, you should have a job in your career field lined up before you walk across that stage.

Whether still in college or a recent graduate, this blog is to help you learn what you can do to separate yourself from your peers.

I am looking forward to the journey and conversation with all of you.
