As an upper-level college student, it can be overwhelming trying to figure out where to start networking. There are so many unknowns related to it and that fear of not being taken seriously by real professionals in the real world can make networking sound like torture.

However, there is one networking opportunity that most students ignore. It is the easiest place to start and can produce real opportunities if you treat the opportunity right.

At some point while you were in college you had a thought similar to this:

“Business cards? I am a student. Why would I have business cards?”

I remember thinking the same thing not too long ago.

I would go to networking events and receive business cards from the people who I met, but then that awkward moment came when I thought “Well crap. I don’t have anything to give back to them. Now they think that I am just another unprepared college student that they just wasted a perfectly good business card on.” (more…)

Sure you need a great résumé, nice interview clothes, a portfolio and all of those other things your professors preach, but none of those will do you much good unless you learn how to network and network often.

Normally I am against the “spray and pray” mentality, but when it comes to networking, getting your name out there in as many circles (that apply to your field in any way, shape or form) is essential.
