As news of Brian Dunn stepping down as CEO of Best Buy spreads across the Interwebs, many people are asking, “What is next for Best Buy?” Is Best Buy on the same crash course that sank Circuit City in 2009?

Maybe.

I am sure anyone who has been in a Best Buy lately has noticed that the computer section looks much different that it did just two years ago. The desktop section is as easy to miss as the alarm clock section and the laptop selection is about as underwhelming as Lamar Odom’s performance with the Dallas Maverick’s. However, the tablets are spreading like the weeds in my front yard and their phone sales are so impressive that Best Buy has “Best Buy Mobile” stores popping up in malls. (more…)

Don't Mess With Texas, Dr. Pepper!


If you are a fan (or now previous fan) of Dr. Pepper or have been fortunate enough to have been exposed to Dublin Dr. Pepper, I am sure you have cursed, sworn off the soft drink giant and strangle every bottle or can of the high-fructose corn syrup laced beverage of corporate greed.

I am right there with you.

However, I have taken the time to think about what went down and what else could have possibly gone down. I am not your typical conspiracy theorist, but when someone messes with a sacred staple of southern goodness, they should expect a demand for answers only rivaled by Area 51 and the Moon Landing.

So I am going to break this into two parts, the conspiracy theory and what would have been the smarter move.

As an intern, you are bound to make mistakes. Sometimes they are unavoidable and other times they are. As an intern, I have made my share of mistakes and luckily I have walked away mostly unscathed. However, had I handled them differently they could have cost me my job. (more…)

Thank you to all who have served this great country of ours.

I only knew the U.S. Coast Guard existed for about a month before I signed up, but it was the best decision I ever made.

I had grown up, graduated high school and was attending community college all in the same town. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and realized that I needed to get out of Weatherford, Texas for a while and see what else the world had to offer. Four years would be plenty of time to mature and be productive while figuring out a path. Not to mention, my college would be paid for when I finished my enlistment.

Five months out of basic training, I experienced one of, if not the worst, natural disasters that our country has ever experienced. U.S. Coast Guard Station Gulfport, Mississippi took a direct hit from Hurricane Katrina. (more…)

Sure you need a great résumé, nice interview clothes, a portfolio and all of those other things your professors preach, but none of those will do you much good unless you learn how to network and network often.

Normally I am against the “spray and pray” mentality, but when it comes to networking, getting your name out there in as many circles (that apply to your field in any way, shape or form) is essential.
